What is XRP (Ripple)?

XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger, designed as a bridge asset for fast, low-cost cross-border payments. According to the XRP Ledger documentation, the network went live in 2012. Bitcoin positions itself as digital gold and Ethereum as a decentralized computer. XRP was built from the start for a narrower job: connecting different currencies so that international payments can settle in seconds.

XRP targets the inefficiency of traditional international transfers. A cross-border bank wire, such as sending US dollars to a supplier in Europe or to family in the Philippines, can take days and collect fees as it passes through correspondent banks. XRP is designed to sit in the middle as an instant bridge ('USD โ†’ XRP โ†’ EUR') to reduce the time, cost and pre-funded capital that legacy transfers require.

Are Ripple and XRP the same thing?

Ripple and XRP are not the same thing. XRP is the digital asset that runs on the XRP Ledger, an open public blockchain. Ripple is a US company that builds payment and custody products for financial institutions using XRP and blockchain technology. The XRP Ledger is open source, so the network can keep running independently of Ripple the company.

XRP's price still reacts strongly to news about Ripple. Ripple holds a large share of XRP and leads much of the ecosystem, so the company's partnerships, legal cases and announcements move market sentiment. This is why headlines often use 'Ripple' and 'XRP' interchangeably.

How does the XRP Ledger work?

XRP has no mining. The XRP Ledger does not create new coins through computing competition as Bitcoin does. Instead, validators agree on transactions through a consensus protocol. Per the XRP Ledger documentation (checked September 2026), transactions typically settle in 3 to 5 seconds and the base transaction fee is 0.00001 XRP.

XRP Ledger throughput is about 1,500 transactions per second, per the XRP Ledger documentation (checked September 2026). XRP paid as fees is destroyed rather than paid to anyone, so the total supply shrinks very slowly over time. This combination of speed and low cost is why XRP is often described as a payments-focused coin.

What is the total supply of XRP?

XRP's full supply of 100 billion tokens was created when the ledger launched. Per the XRP Ledger documentation (checked September 2026), no new XRP can be issued. In 2017 Ripple locked much of its holdings in on-ledger escrow contracts that release up to 1 billion XRP on the first of each month. Ripple usually re-locks any unused portion.

XRP escrow balances keep falling. After the scheduled release on September 1, 2026, about 31.28 billion XRP remained locked in escrow, according to crypto.news reporting. The escrow schedule makes supply predictable, but it also feeds the supply overhang debate: the argument that monthly releases weigh on the price. Anyone evaluating XRP should look at both circulating supply and the remaining escrow.

What is happening with XRP in 2026?

The biggest recent change for XRP is the end of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit. The case began in December 2020 and ended in August 2025, when Ripple and the SEC both dropped their appeals. That left the Southern District of New York rulings in place: sales of XRP on exchanges are not securities transactions, while Ripple's direct institutional sales fell under securities law. The court also imposed a $125 million civil penalty on Ripple.

XRP moved into regulated investment products after the case closed. The first US spot XRP ETFs launched in November 2025, with issuers including Grayscale, Franklin Templeton, Bitwise, 21Shares and Canary. Cumulative net inflows into these funds passed $1.6 billion during 2026, according to industry ETF flow trackers.

Ripple the company has also expanded beyond XRP. In December 2024 it launched RLUSD, a dollar-backed stablecoin supervised by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). RLUSD's market cap was about $1.78 billion as of late May 2026, according to industry trackers. Ripple also acquired prime broker Hidden Road and, in December 2025, received conditional approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to form a national trust bank. RLUSD provides stable settlement value, while XRP serves as the bridge asset and liquidity layer.

What is on the XRP roadmap?

The XRP Ledger is expanding its smart-contract capabilities. The XRPL EVM sidechain opened its mainnet in June 2025, allowing Ethereum-compatible smart contracts that use XRP for gas. On the main ledger, a 'Batch' amendment that bundles several transactions together was going through validator voting and activation as of September 2026.

Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization and institutional decentralized finance (DeFi) are another XRP Ledger priority. The XRP Ledger developer community has published a roadmap for tokenizing assets such as bonds and funds and for expanding institutional DeFi. Much of that work adds native ledger features, such as the built-in automated market maker (AMM), so financial services can be built without complex smart contracts.

The XRP ecosystem is also preparing for long-term security challenges. Ripple has outlined plans to research quantum-resistant cryptography ahead of possible future quantum-computing threats. On the related Xahau sidechain, partners are commercializing remittance settlement systems, which extends XRP-linked technology into live payment use.

What is XRP used for?

XRP's main use case is Ripple's cross-border payments service. Ripple runs a payments network for financial institutions, formerly called RippleNet and now Ripple Payments. Its On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) feature uses XRP as a bridge asset to settle international transfers without pre-funding. The core benefit is that banks and remittance firms need to park less capital in each destination country.

The XRP ecosystem now reaches beyond payments. It includes the RLUSD stablecoin, real-world asset tokenization on the XRP Ledger and DeFi built on the EVM sidechain. As a result, XRP is shifting from a single payments coin toward a broader payments and asset ecosystem centered on XRP.

What are the risks of XRP?

XRP's first risk is supply pressure. Critics argue that Ripple's large XRP holdings and the monthly escrow releases can add selling pressure to the market. The second risk is centralization. Ripple's large stake and the makeup of the validator list raise questions about how decentralized the XRP Ledger really is.

XRP's third risk is competition. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are already widely used in cross-border payments, and SWIFT, the incumbent network, is testing its own blockchain-based settlement. Either trend could leave XRP with a narrower role than its supporters expect. XRP's price has also been highly volatile, moving with macroeconomic conditions and the wider crypto market.

XRP combines positive developments (regulatory clarity, ETF launches, a growing ecosystem) with ongoing concerns (supply overhang, competition, price volatility).
