Optimism (OP), alongside Arbitrum, is a flagship of Ethereum Layer 2 (L2). It processes transactions off Ethereum's base layer and records only the results there, borrowing Ethereum's security while sharply cutting fees.
Its method โ 'optimistic rollups' โ is the same as Arbitrum's, but Optimism differentiates itself with a distinct philosophy and a 'Superchain' vision. It is built by OP Labs.
Optimism's centerpiece is the 'OP Stack'. It open-sourced this standard code so anyone can build their own L2, aiming for a 'Superchain' where the chains built this way connect like a single network.
Notably, Coinbase's popular L2 'Base' is built on the OP Stack. Optimism's strategy is to become not 'one chain' but 'a standard shared by many L2s'.
A distinctive Optimism culture is 'Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF)'. It distributes rewards after the fact to developers and projects that contributed to the ecosystem, based on what they have already built.
The principle 'do good and be rewarded later' is an attempt to grow a healthy ecosystem. This public-goods philosophy is the identity that sets Optimism apart from other L2s.
OP is not gas (gas is paid in ETH) but a governance token that decides how Optimism is run. Through the two-house 'Optimism Collective' (Token House and Citizens' House), it sets funding allocation and direction.
In other words, OP is the voting power of the Superchain ecosystem โ which is where the debate over how OP's value ties to network growth begins.
Optimism's roadmap focuses on actually making the Superchain work 'as one': instant cross-chain interoperability (moving messages and assets), full fraud proofs (decentralized verification), and folding more chains into the Superchain.
The goal is to complete 'a single Superchain of many L2s smoothly connected'.
Optimism's biggest debate is whether value accrues to OP. In particular, as Base โ built on the OP Stack โ grows larger than Optimism's own network, some worry that 'the standard is Optimism's but Base takes the fruit'.
