Bitcoin's spirit + the speed of a DAG
Kaspa (KAS) is a coin that runs on mining (proof of work, PoW) like Bitcoin, but with a decisive difference. Instead of stacking blocks in a single line, it uses a 'blockDAG' structure that can create many blocks at once, making it far faster than Bitcoin.
The idea is to 'keep Bitcoin's decentralization and fairness while solving only its slowness'. It is one of the most technically watched pure-PoW projects.
blockDAG and GHOSTDAG โ how it's fast
Ordinary blockchains, when several blocks appear at once, keep only one and discard the rest (which is why they're slow). Kaspa's 'GHOSTDAG' protocol doesn't discard simultaneous blocks โ it weaves them all into a mesh and orders them.
So it can create several blocks per second, making transaction finality very fast. 'PoW that stacks blocks in parallel' is Kaspa's core innovation.
A fair start โ no premine
Kaspa prides itself on a 'fair launch'. With no pre-allocation to founders or investors (premine) and no ICO fundraising, it began in 2021 like early Bitcoin, where anyone could join purely by mining.
Its designer is Yonatan Sompolinsky, author of the GHOST protocol who also took part in early Ethereum research. This 'fairness' is a strong point of pride for the Kaspa community.
Toward smart contracts โ Crescendo
Kaspa is expanding beyond payments and storage. The 'Crescendo' upgrade raised block creation to around ten per second, and it is phasing in tokens (KRC-20) and smart-contract features.
With speed as its strength, it aims to layer a DeFi and app ecosystem on top โ a chain that is 'PoW yet also does smart contracts'.
Roadmap โ smart contracts and performance
Kaspa's roadmap focuses, after raising block speed, on introducing a smart-contract layer (a Rust-based reimplementation, the DagKnight consensus and more) and expanding the ecosystem. The goal is to have real apps run on fast PoW.
It aims to move from 'the fastest pure-PoW chain' to 'a useful smart chain'.
What to watch with Kaspa
Kaspa is technically intriguing, but its smart-contract and app ecosystem is still early. How quickly real uses take hold is the key. As a PoW coin, it also carries mining-energy and hash-power-concentration issues.
Its price is heavily swayed by the expectation narrative, so volatility is high. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
