Proving 'you're human' with your iris
Worldcoin (WLD) is an unusual project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. A silver sphere device called the 'Orb' scans a person's iris to issue an identity (World ID) proving they are a 'unique, real human'.
Verified people were given WLD coins. The idea of 'distinguishing each individual person via the blockchain' is Worldcoin's identity.
Why it was made โ proving humanity in the AI era
Worldcoin's premise is that 'as AI advances, it gets harder to tell humans from bots (fake accounts, AI) online'. So it argues we need an identity โ proof of personhood โ that proves 'this account is a real human'.
It also carries an experimental streak of 'universal distribution' for an age when AI replaces much work. 'Infrastructure to prove humanity in the AI era' is Worldcoin's rationale.
The Orb and the World App
The core device is the iris-scanning 'Orb'. When people scan their eyes at an Orb, the project says the actual image is not stored โ only a unique cryptographic code (World ID) remains. This identity is managed in the 'World App' and used for payments and verification.
The project later renamed itself 'World' and even built its own blockchain (World Chain), widening its ecosystem.
Controversy โ privacy and regulation
Worldcoin draws heavy controversy. There are large privacy concerns that it 'lures and collects biometric data (irises) with coins', and several countries (Kenya, Spain, Hong Kong and others) have taken investigative, suspension or regulatory action.
The rationale of 'proving humanity' collides head-on with the danger of 'iris data of people worldwide'. This regulatory and ethical debate is Worldcoin's biggest variable.
Roadmap โ expanding the identity network
World's roadmap focuses on expanding Orb availability, growing the apps and services that use World ID, and growing its own World Chain ecosystem. It seeks to make 'human verification' the default identity for various online services.
Becoming the 'human-verification standard' of the AI era is the ultimate goal.
What to watch with Worldcoin
Worldcoin's biggest risk is regulation. Sanctions in various countries over biometric collection could halt the business itself. However big the rationale, privacy and ethical pushback is strong, so mainstream adoption may not go smoothly.
Supply pressure from large WLD unlocks and big volatility on the expectation narrative are also factors. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
