Sui (SUI) is a Layer 1 launched in May 2023, built by Mysten Labs. Like Aptos, it was founded by engineers from Facebook (Meta)'s abandoned 'Diem' project and uses the safe language 'Move'.
Same root, different direction, though. Where Aptos uses canonical Move, Sui's 'Sui Move' changes how data itself is handled, specializing in parallel processing. The two heirs of Diem each go their own way.
Most blockchains manage balances in one big ledger. Sui instead treats every asset โ coins, NFTs โ as an independent 'object'. Unrelated transactions don't have to fight over ordering, so they can be processed at the same time (in parallel).
In particular, transactions that don't overlap with others โ like a simple transfer โ skip heavy consensus and finalize instantly. This object-centric design is the heart of Sui's speed and scalability.
Sui uses a consensus engine called Mysticeti. With a DAG structure where many validators propose blocks at once, it has cut finality down to a very short time (in the hundreds of milliseconds).
Fast finality is a big advantage for apps that need instant response โ games, trading, payments. 'A blockchain that feels as fast as a web app' is Sui's pitch.
Sui also invests in usability. 'zkLogin' lets you create a wallet by logging in with an existing account like Google or Apple, so you can start without a complex seed phrase.
Add 'sponsored transactions', where an app pays the gas for you, and even beginners can use crypto without thinking about it. It is a UX strategy aimed at mainstream adoption.
Sui's roadmap centers on continually improving throughput and latency: advancing the Mysticeti consensus, handling large data (storage solutions like Walrus), and expanding gaming, social and real-world-asset (RWA) ecosystems.
The goal is to use 'fast finality plus easy usability' to draw in apps with lots of real users.
Sui leads on technology but is still a young chain. Continued token unlocks for early investors and the foundation can pressure the price by increasing supply, and competition with fast L1s like Aptos and Solana is fierce.
