Born as the 'Dogecoin killer'
Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a memecoin created in 2020 by the anonymous 'Ryoshi', which from the start billed itself as the 'Dogecoin killer'. It uses the same Shiba Inu dog as its mascot but was issued as a token on Ethereum (ERC-20).
Its origin story is famous: half the total supply was sent to Ethereum's creator Vitalik Buterin, who burned 90% of it (destroyed it permanently) and donated the rest. That episode is what made Shiba Inu globally known.
Astronomical supply and burning
Shiba Inu's hallmark is its enormous supply. It launched at a scale of around 1,000 trillion coins, so a single unit costs a tiny fraction of a cent. This vast supply is the fundamental drag that makes appreciation hard.
So the Shiba Inu ecosystem focuses on 'burning' coins. It tries to reduce supply by burning SHIB with part of the fees from transactions and services, but with so much still outstanding, some judge the effect limited.
Trying to go beyond a meme โ Shibarium
Shiba Inu grew its own ecosystem to avoid staying a mere meme. Key pieces are the decentralized exchange 'ShibaSwap', the supporting tokens 'BONE' and 'LEASH', and its own Layer 2 'Shibarium', launched in 2023.
Shibarium is a network aiming for both cheap transactions and SHIB burning โ the core of the effort to 'attach real utility to a memecoin'. Starting from a meme and widening into an ecosystem is Shiba Inu's direction.
Shiba Inu in 2026
Shiba Inu remains one of the flagship memecoins with a large community. Efforts to add 'utility' continue โ apps on Shibarium, burn campaigns, metaverse and gaming.
But its price is heavily swayed by the meme cycle and market sentiment. Whether utility takes hold enough to replace the heat of the meme is Shiba Inu's long-term challenge.
Roadmap โ attaching utility
Shiba Inu's roadmap is 'from meme to ecosystem': improving Shibarium's performance and privacy, strengthening the burn mechanism, and expanding into real apps, payments and the metaverse.
The direction is to reduce the coin's vast supply through burning while growing real uses to underpin value.
Should you buy Shiba Inu โ a cool-headed check
Shiba Inu has a big community but is fundamentally a memecoin, so it is extremely volatile. Its astronomical supply makes price gains structurally hard despite burning, and if the trend cools the crash risk is large.
Whether the 'utility' story turns into real use is still to be proven. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
