Overview
DigiByte (DGB) is an open-source UTXO blockchain whose development began in late 2013 and which launched in early 2014. Beyond functioning as a digital currency, it is designed to support digital asset issuance (DigiAssets), smart contracts, decentralized applications, and Digi-ID authentication. The project started without an ICO or a significant premine and has no company or CEO directing it; development is carried out by a volunteer-based global community.
Technically, DigiByte combines five mining algorithms with real-time difficulty adjustment to reduce mining centralization and sudden hash-power swings. One of these, Odocrypt, changes itself roughly every 10 days as an ASIC-resistance measure. Blocks are produced about every 15 seconds, faster than Bitcoin's interval, and an early SegWit implementation increased on-chain throughput; the network is also noted for adopting features such as the DigiShield difficulty guard, MultiAlgo mining, and the Dandelion++ privacy protocol relatively early.
