The internet of blockchains

Cosmos (ATOM), instead of building one giant chain, has the vision of connecting many independent blockchains to each other โ€” hence its nickname, 'the internet of blockchains'.

Where Ethereum puts every app on one chain, Cosmos's approach is to give each app its own dedicated chain (an 'app-chain') and link them together. ATOM is the coin that secures the central Cosmos Hub.

IBC โ€” connecting chain to chain

The heart of Cosmos is IBC (the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol). IBC lets different blockchains exchange tokens and data directly, without a central intermediary โ€” much like different servers on the internet talking through a standard protocol.

Thanks to that standard, chains built with Cosmos interact easily. Connectivity is the identity of the Cosmos ecosystem.

Anyone can build a chain โ€” the Cosmos SDK

Cosmos provides the 'Cosmos SDK' and the 'CometBFT' (formerly Tendermint) consensus engine, letting developers build their own blockchain relatively easily. In fact many well-known projects โ€” Osmosis, Injective, Celestia, dYdX โ€” were built with Cosmos tech.

This is where the app-chain philosophy of 'a dedicated chain optimized per app' comes from. Cosmos is less a single chain than a vast 'ecosystem of chains'.

ATOM's role and the debate

ATOM is the coin that secures the central 'Cosmos Hub' via proof of stake. But chains built with Cosmos are each independent and don't necessarily need ATOM, fueling a long-running debate that 'the ecosystem grows but value doesn't accrue to ATOM'.

To address this, measures like 'Interchain Security' โ€” where the Hub lends its security to other chains โ€” were introduced. Growing ATOM's usefulness is Cosmos's homework.

Roadmap โ€” growing the Hub's usefulness

The core of the Cosmos roadmap is strengthening the role of ATOM and the Hub: expanding Interchain Security that provides safety to other chains, advancing IBC features, and improving liquidity and interoperability.

The direction is to position the Hub as 'a gateway that connects many app-chains and a supplier of security'.

What to watch with Cosmos

Cosmos's biggest weakness is precisely ATOM's value-accrual problem. The technology and ecosystem are broad, but whether that growth reaches ATOM's price is uncertain, and its relatively high inflation (issuance) is a burden.

Some also note the ecosystem is scattered across many chains and hard to track. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
