Smart contracts for Bitcoin โ€” Stacks

Stacks (STX) is a project with the goal of 'putting apps on top of Bitcoin'. Bitcoin is secure but hard to run smart contracts (apps like DeFi and NFTs) on directly. Stacks adds a separate layer above it, running apps while borrowing Bitcoin's security.

In other words, it is an attempt to 'let the Bitcoin ecosystem do what Ethereum does'. It is regarded as a flagship Bitcoin-layer project.

Proof of Transfer (PoX) โ€” anchored to Bitcoin

Stacks' distinctive consensus is 'Proof of Transfer (PoX)'. Miners pay Bitcoin (BTC) to earn the right to create Stacks blocks, and people who stake STX receive actual Bitcoin rewards in return.

Stacks' transaction records are also periodically 'anchored' to Bitcoin, rooting into Bitcoin's strong security. 'An app-chain anchored to Bitcoin' is Stacks' structure.

sBTC and the Nakamoto upgrade

The 2024 'Nakamoto' upgrade greatly raised Stacks' block speed and gave it Bitcoin-level finality. The 'sBTC' introduced alongside it is a trust-minimized bridge that brings Bitcoin into Stacks to use in apps and can return it to Bitcoin.

This brought the long-standing goal of 'putting dormant Bitcoin to work in DeFi' a step closer. Pulling Bitcoin's liquidity into apps is the core.

Amid Bitcoin L2 competition

As the trend to 'add utility to Bitcoin' has grown, many Bitcoin layers and projects besides Stacks have appeared. As one of the oldest first movers, Stacks seeks to differentiate with sBTC and its ecosystem apps.

Competition is underway over the spot as 'the layer that actually puts Bitcoin's vast assets to use'.

Roadmap โ€” expanding Bitcoin's use

Stacks' roadmap focuses on expanding sBTC use, growing the app ecosystem (DeFi, NFTs), and improving performance and usability. The goal is 'to get Bitcoin holders naturally using apps'.

The direction is to extend Bitcoin โ€” a giant foundation โ€” from an asset into a 'platform'.

What to watch with Stacks

Stacks' key is whether 'Bitcoin holders actually use Stacks apps'. Usage may not follow as hoped, and competition with newly emerged Bitcoin layers is fierce. Its structure is also complex and hard to understand.

The technical and security risk of bridges like sBTC is worth noting too. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
