A decentralized network for AI
Bittensor (TAO) is a network that champions 'decentralized artificial intelligence (AI)'. Instead of one company monopolizing AI, participants worldwide each provide AI models, data and computation and are rewarded in TAO according to their contribution.
Its vision is to build 'AI that anyone can join and own, against centralized AI like Google and OpenAI'. It is seen as a flagship where crypto meets AI.
Subnets โ building AI through competition
Bittensor is divided into many specialized markets called 'subnets'. Each subnet centers on a specific task (e.g. text generation, images, data collection), and participants (miners) compete to produce better AI results.
Validators score the quality of those results, and better contributions earn more TAO. 'A market that raises AI quality through competition' is Bittensor's core mechanism.
A token that resembles Bitcoin
TAO's economics resemble Bitcoin's. Its total supply is capped at 21 million, and it has a halving where rewards periodically drop by half โ aiming to be 'the Bitcoin of the AI world'.
This scarcity design gives TAO a 'store of value as a digital asset' character. What's distinctive is that rewards for AI contributions are paid in a limited-supply coin.
dTAO and ecosystem expansion
Through an upgrade called 'dTAO', Bittensor gave each subnet its own token, so that capital and resources flow to promising subnets. Well-performing AI subnets receive more reward and attention.
This is widening the ecosystem across varied AI fields โ text, images, prediction, data. It is evolving into 'a bundle of many AI markets'.
Roadmap โ refining the AI markets
Bittensor's roadmap focuses on growing the subnet ecosystem and finely tuning the contribution, evaluation and reward mechanisms. Getting more practical AI services running on Bittensor and connecting to external apps is also a task.
It aims to advance to the stage where 'decentralized AI produces genuinely useful results'.
What to watch with Bittensor
Bittensor's biggest difficulty is that 'the value of AI contributions is hard to evaluate objectively'. It is tricky to judge whether rewards are distributed properly and whether genuinely useful AI emerges. Some note the structure is complex and hard for beginners to grasp.
Its price also swings widely on AI-theme hype. This article is information, not advice; always make investment decisions at your own responsibility.
