What is BNB?

BNB is the coin issued in 2017 by Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, and is the core asset of the Binance ecosystem and its own 'BNB Chain'. It began as an Ethereum-based token for trading-fee discounts, then moved to its own blockchain.

Today it is a broad 'utility coin' used not only for exchange-fee discounts but also for gas on BNB Chain, staking, payments and launchpad participation.

How it works โ€” BNB Chain

BNB Chain centers on 'BSC', an Ethereum-compatible (EVM) smart-contract chain, plus the 'opBNB' scaling layer and 'Greenfield' decentralized storage. A proof-of-stake-style consensus (PoSA) gives it fast, low-cost transactions.

Because it is EVM-compatible, existing dApps port over easily, and low fees make DeFi, games and memecoins active.

Supply and burns

BNB launched with 200 million tokens and uses a quarterly 'Auto-Burn' to shrink supply toward a final 100 million. The burn amount is set automatically from BNB's price and block production, making it transparent and predictable.

For example, the 34th burn in January 2026 destroyed about 1.37M BNB (~$1.28B), and the 36th removed roughly 1.6M BNB (~$932M), maintaining steady deflationary pressure.

Where things stand (2026)

Auto-Burn continues to reduce total supply, and the Lorentz and Maxwell upgrades sped up block production. Utility has broadened too: Binance Pay lets users spend BNB on flights, hotels and retail, while Greenfield uses BNB to pay for data storage.

That said, BNB is tightly linked to Binance the company, so the firm's regulatory and legal issues directly affect the coin โ€” a key difference from other cryptocurrencies.

The road ahead

Near term, Auto-Burn keeps shrinking supply, while opBNB and Greenfield push BNB beyond an 'exchange coin' toward payments, storage and DeFi infrastructure.

The key variable is regulation: how Binance coexists with rules around the world will heavily shape BNB's long-term outlook.

Use cases

BNB's main uses are Binance trading-fee discounts, paying gas on BNB Chain, joining launchpads for new tokens, and real-world spending via Binance Pay.

It is also widely used as the base asset across DeFi, NFTs and games on BNB Chain.

Risks

The biggest risk is dependence on Binance: with issuance and ecosystem concentrated in one company, regulatory, legal or management issues translate directly into price risk, and this ties into centralization concerns.

Tightening regulation worldwide and competition from other chains are also factors. Always do your own research; this is not investment advice.
