Avalanche (AVAX) is a fast blockchain built in 2020 by Emin GΓΌn Sirer's Ava Labs. It stands out for quick transaction finality and for making it easy to launch your own purpose-built blockchain (a custom L1).
The coin AVAX is used for fees, staking and security. Its strength is letting companies, games and institutions run dedicated chains with their own rules.
Avalanche uses its own 'Avalanche consensus' for fast finality and splits work across three chains (X, P, C). The C-Chain is Ethereum-compatible (EVM), so existing dApps port over easily.
The core idea is the 'subnet' β after the late-2024 'Avalanche9000 (Etna)' upgrade these are now called 'Avalanche L1s', and the cost to launch one dropped by roughly 99.9%.
AVAX has a fixed maximum supply of 720 million. It is issued as staking rewards, but fee burning offsets some of that issuance.
The clear cap makes long-term supply predictable.
The biggest change is the 'Avalanche9000' upgrade. Previously, launching a dedicated chain (subnet) required locking 2,000 AVAX; now it costs a flat fee of about 1.33 AVAX per validator per month, letting companies, games and institutions spin up custom L1s easily.
As a result, development has shifted toward expanding sovereign L1s, lowering base fees and improving performance.
The core strategy is to grow an ecosystem where many custom L1s run on Avalanche, attracting dedicated chains for institutions, games and real-world assets (RWAs).
At the same time it aims to lower base fees further and improve dynamic fee markets and performance.
First, fierce competition from the likes of Solana and Ethereum L2s. Second, a value-accrual debate over whether enough value flows to AVAX itself as custom L1s grow.
